![]() Right now the offices of many companies are filled with marketing people running around stressing out about promotions for the upcoming holiday shopping season. If thinking about the holidays gives you a pit in your stomach because your company’s performance last year was less than stellar, this article was written with you in mind! In my former job, at the nation’s leading ecommerce provider, I saw a lot of examples of holiday marketing done well and just as many as examples of holiday marketing that went horribly wrong. These are the most common reasons why holiday marketing fails every year: ![]() Winter is here. Okay, so winter hasn’t technically started yet but today is the first snow day of the season here in Grand Rapids so for all intents and purposes, winter is here. The kids are outside playing in the first snowfall of the year, which led me to wonder – what can entrepreneurs do on snow days? Here’s a great big list: Social media is more than just a way to get your business’s name out there – it is also key to a strong digital marketing strategy. The reason for this is because social media actually helps your SEO efforts.
Now, there has been some debate over how much social media actually contributes to your SEO. A few years ago Google confirmed that social signals were actually being used as factors in their algorithm. Social media professionals rejoiced and shouted this from the rooftops. At the time, however, Google was really trying to push Google+ hard to the most dedicated social media users so that it would catch on. It never really did – trailing Facbook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram to this day. Then, Google backtracked some saying that they couldn’t confirm that social signals were being used for ranking determinations, but that social media provided additional inbound links, which did factor into their algorithm. Social media professionals found talking points to address this confusing issue with clients. So, what do we know for sure about social media and SEO? I want to preface this article by saying that you do not need to be a churchgoer to benefit from this post. I definitely don’t have a religious agenda that I’m pushing – I just think that the church signs that we pass on the road everyday serve teach some valuable marketing lessons that can be applied to any number of industries. Alrighty? Let’s get started…
A church’s sign out front is there to advertise. By presenting upcoming events and faith-based messages a church seeks to educate the community about who they are and why you should want to attend. Just like a regular business, these signs out front are meant to catch the eyes of people passing by and convince them to come in and buy into what they have to offer. Now, as many people can attest to, some churches do not do a great job with this advertising opportunity, which is in keeping with businesses at large – some do a great job marketing themselves and some… don’t. But I would like to focus on one example of a church sign done correctly. |
